Chives are in the Allium genus, just like garlic, onions, and leeks and are also considered a vegetable. Chives are low in calories and high in vitamins and minerals thus considered a nutrient dense food. Not many people eat large quantities thus consumption of the nutrients are not high. Average is 1 tablespoon provides vitamins A, C, K, calcium, potassium and folate.
One of the major health benefits for chives is cancer prevention. As a member of the Allium genus, onion, garlic, leeks and chives all help to reduce the chance of developing cancer in addition to a diet high in vegetables. Chives also contain the nutrient choline. Choline helps the body with brain and nervous systems which is your mood, memory, and muscle control.
Just like other green vegetables, chives help with blood clotting and bone health. Chives have good amount of folate which helps the body with dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, congenital heart defects, cognitive function, cardiovascular disease and stroke, depression, and preterm birth. Chives have a relationship just like garlic has with health for such conditions as heart disease and high blood sugar. Chives may also have antitumor and antimicrobial benefits.
