Chickpea or Garbanzo Bean?
Chickpeas are also known as Garbanzo beans, Dwarf pea, or Yellow gram, to name a few. This humble legume is ideal for men and women’s healthy meals. Chickpeas help reduce cholesterol, reduce possible constipation and strengthen the nervous system. Chickpeas contain a good source of the most important nutrients, the B vitamins, except the B12, also the provitamin A and vitamins C and E. Chickpeas provide a significant amount of protein, equal to but superior to meat and eggs, but less than other protein rich legumes. Chickpeas are complete proteins meaning they contain all the amino acids except amino acid methionine. However if the chickpea is eaten with any grain, that compensates for this exception. Chickpeas are very rich in carbohydrates, and has some polyunsaturated fats. Chickpeas have many minerals such as iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium and zinc. Chickpeas are an almost complete food, so when used as the main dish they provide nutritional balance. Chickpea fiber impedes the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines, also prevents arteriosclerosis which causes heart attack. Some nutritionists claim that plant-based foods are lacking in zinc, however Chickpeas are an excellent source.
