Kitchen Herbs and Medicinal Uses - Bay Leaf

Rich deep faintly spicy, bay leaves are commonly used to flavor soups and other main dishes. Grown just about anywhere but most commonly found in the Caribbean and India. Bay leaves are a good source of vitamins A, B6, and C which all aid the immune system plus it contains calcium, iron and manganese. Bay leaves also contain many trace minerals such as copper, magnesium, riboflavin, and zinc.

Bay leaves can provide some medicinal help. In Type 2 diabetes, there has been  studies that show reduction of blood sugar levels when ingested in capsules or drank as a tea. Bay leaves also help with gastrointestinal issues by preventing gastric damage and encouraging urination to reduce toxins. This relieves the stress on the kidneys.  In addition bay leaves help with upset stomach and irritable bowel syndrome. Certain properties in bay leaves help the body fight inflammation by stopped production of nitric oxide. Other properties help the heart by lowering bad cholesterol levels and strengthening the capillary walls.

According to the Journal of Nutrition Research, bay leaves are showing anti cancer benefits. The antioxidant properties and organic compounds help protect the body from free radicals which can cause cancer. Bay leaves also have anti-fugal properties to combat fungus to protect the skin from infection and irritation. Lastly bay leaves can help with stress and anxiety. It’s soothing qualities relax a person thus reduce the underlying causes of stress and anxiety.

Tea Recipe:

  • 3 large leaves

  • 3 cups water

  • 1-2 cups milk (optional)

  • 1-2 tsp honey or stevia

Bring to a boil water. Add leaves and boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and steep 3 more minutes. Remove leaves. Sweeten if desired. Add milk slowly as the flavor can change.
